National Strawberry Day is observed in the United States on February 27 each year. In honor of that day, and one of our favorite things, (strawberries!!) here are some of our Top Picked Recipes: National Strawberry Day.

Origin of Strawberries

There are two schools of thought as to the origin of Strawberries, and how they got their name. One theory is that when the berries fell off the berry plants, they were “strewn” all over the ground, and became strewnberries, which over time turned into strawberries. The other theory is that strawberry beds were mulched and insulated with straw to keep the weeds away, and to keep them warm over the winter. With the use of the straw came their name, strawberries.

Recipes

Fresh Strawberry Milkshakes (From: My Recipes)

Juicy strawberries, and creamy vanilla ice cream are highlighted in this sweet dessert drink. Milkshakes can be so underrated, and this one definitely delivers. Milkshakes are a wonderful afternoon pick-me up, or a great post-dinner treat. You could even add in a banana for a strawberry-banana milkshake, or a quick pour of chocolate syrup for a chocolate-covered strawberry milkshake.

Strawberry Crumb Bars (From: Flavor Mosaic)

Who doesn’t love a good fruit crumb bar? Buttery, rich crumb is the perfect envelope to a layer of juicy, sweet strawberry filling. Minimal ingredients are needed for these bars, but there is no skimp on the flavor. You could even add in some other fruits that will complement the strawberries, including blueberries, raspberries or rhubarb!

Balsamic Glazed Salmon with Strawberry Salsa (From: Life as a Strawberry)

In addition to being great for desserts (mmmm, Strawberry Pie), Strawberries are also a wonderful, and fresh ingredient for savory dishes. They are wonderful in salads, and pair well with a number of main dish options. In this salmon dish, the strawberries are an excellent choice for the sweet salsa that tops the tangy balsamic-glazed salmon. I can even imagine this recipe with a little goat cheese. Strawberries and goat cheese are another excellent combination!

Here’s another reminder that National Strawberry Day is right around the corner on February 27, so be sure to have your Top Picked Recipes: National Strawberry Day ready to go for the big day!
