What Can I Get Dad For Father’s Day This Year?

Figuring out what dad wants for Father’s Day is a dilemma many kids (from 5 to 65) have experienced ever since Father’s Day was invented.

And speaking of that, the first Father’s Day was June 19, 1910, created by a wonderful daughter, Sonora Smart Dodd, to honor her beloved father, William Jackson Smart. A Civil War veteran, William also was a single father raising Sonora and her five brothers on his own.

What a great daughter-father duo to kick off Father’s Day more than 100 years ago!

My Credentials…

I’ve been a single parent for a few years now to a teenage daughter who’s the center of my universe. So I really have to hand it to William. Being on your own as a parent adds another level of urgency to your role, which already ranks as one of the most meaningful jobs a man can have. Beyond that, William had six kids! All I can say is WOW!

Given the importance of fatherhood, finding that ideal gift for your dad is admittedly tricky. Most dads aren’t all that expressive when it comes to telling their kids what they like. (I know, that’s an understatement). And often dads don’t want their kids to spend too much on anything.

Father’s Day Gifting Tips

But as a very dedicated dad, myself, I can tell you there are a few ideas that should be safe bets for many fathers. Here are just a few hints:

Tip #1

Chocolate and caramel are a win-win combination at least 90% of the time.

Tip #2

Anything your father can easily snack on while watching TV, like a favorite sporting event or show, usually goes over well.

Tip #3

Something that’s both delicious and healthy is becoming more “in” among many fathers. That’s right. While fathers are among the planet’s most indulgent snackers, many of us want to at least appear as if we’re trying to be healthy. And in the back of your father’s mind, if eating healthy will help him to stay around a long time to keep guiding and supporting you, he’ll at least make an effort.

Could this be any healthier (and still taste great)? This basket is perfect for the father who likes snacks but wants to eat more fruit and fewer candies.

Beer Gifts

Of course, if your dad is less of a foodie and more of a beer aficionado, you can always go with one of these beer buckets. The pairing of beer and fathers pre-dates Father’s Day by several centuries.

Just remember, whatever you choose for Father’s Day, your dad will be thrilled that you made the effort to acknowledge his contributions to your happiness. While being a father is genuinely its own reward, seeing extra appreciation from your kids is always heartwarming.

Happy Father’s Day, everyone!
