Heading back to school after a fun, free summer can be hard. Here’s a Back-to-School Checklist to keep in mind as kids head back to school and we all jump back into our weekly school-day routines of bus schedules, packing lunches, LAUNDRY, and homework. Does it really have to start so soon? Soaking up these last couple weeks of summer while they last!
If you haven’t received a letter in the mail detailing your child’s school supplies, checking the school website is a great resource. Most districts have a portal that includes all relevant back-to-school information: bus times, school supplies lists, building maps and all the information for after-school activities.
Gifts for Teacher
The Mr. or Mrs. (or Ms.!!) who is in charge of your child’s education this year deserves something to get their school year off on the right foot, as well. This Back To School Cookie Cake is adorable and such a fun way to welcome everyone back to school.
Gift cards, thank you notes and school supplies are also gifts hugely appreciated by teachers. Most teachers buy a lot of their supplies out of pocket – so Sharpies, highlighters, post-it notes, and dry erase markers all make for great gifts and enhance the classroom!
Take a look at your child’s wardrobe and decide what’s necessary to start the school year. Mixing in a few new items of clothing might help your child be excited for school and help make a great impression. Donate any old clothing and items that no longer fit and teach the importance of giving back.
Take a look at the school dress code to make sure that there are no guidelines you have to follow. Sometimes schools will omit athletic apparel or anything with a name brand logo from their schools. Keep in mind that your child may need a smock for art class or perhaps a change of clothes for physical education depending on their age and grade level.
Your little ones will come home from school hungry! Make sure you’re stocked with healthy choices and nutritious snacks to fuel their minds and bodies. Packing lunches the night before is a great way to save time. Prepping cut fruit and vegetables at the start of the week makes it super easy to stay up with lunches throughout the week, as well.
We can’t forget about those heading off to college! Although the kids with darling fresh haircuts and superhero backpacks are just so cute – let’s not forget about those who are heading back to college! Make sure they have everything they need to make it through their first semester. Our Care Packages are an excellent way to let them know that you’re thinking of them – even though they may be hours away. Our selection of Healthy Options are a great way to help them avoid the “Freshman 15” and keep their nutrition in check. Gluten-Free? We’ve got that covered too.
Establishing a routine with your child for both before and after school will be your saving grace! Giving them a checklist of things to do before school (brush teeth, make bed, get dressed, eat breakfast, shoes on, etc.) eliminates the stress of morning chaos and pushes them to be independent. The same thing can be done in the evening (unpack bag, bring lunch to kitchen, homework, snack, hang coat, etc.) before any play time can happen keeps everyone on track and skips the nightly battle! Keeping bedtime consistent and following the same routine each night will also make back-to-school a little bit easier on everyone. Good luck!
Other things to remember:
- Schools physicals and required immunizations up to date
- Have your child memorize your address and phone number in case of emergency
- Label all jackets, hats, gloves and sporting equipment in case it gets lost
- Book haircuts and any necessary doctor appointments
- Don’t forget to take pictures!
