A friend of mine found out that her college-age daughter had a new boyfriend by reading her updated Facebook page. The mom was surprised and a little hurt. Why hadn’t she been told? The daughter was angry. “You’re not supposed to read that, mother! It’s not for you.” This was the daughter’s own young-person’s life, out there on the internet for all the world to see – except, apparently, her mother.

Cupid’s fickle bow is poised for Valentine’s Day. Florists’ windows scream roses, card stores devote entire aisles to sentiments loving and lewd, and chocolate packers are on overtime. While it is not customary for bosses to send candy or roses, there are some free gifts they can deliver any day. The ideas all come from that same old non-love song I’ve heard in offices over a long career.

Last year my husband and I went on vacation with two other couples. We rented a house on a tropical island, ate at great restaurants, walked on the beach. Sometimes two or three of us drove off to explore, others sat by the pool. We read books, drank mojitos, watched the sunset, played Scrabble. At the end of the trip, we congratulated ourselves on how well we all got along, how easy it was to be in each other’s company.
