I’m old enough now to know better. I understand that in my life-time, I will not see a cure for cancer, a diet that enables folks to lose weight and keep it off, and a sure-fire way to get babies to sleep through the night. With no disrespect to John Lennon, I also don’t imagine world peace any time soon.

Legend has it that the Inuit have 400 words for “snow,” but that is merely legend. According to Karyn Tasens, president and CEO of Translation Aces, they have no more words for the white crystals than do speakers of English. Counting generously, linguist Steven Pinker experts can come up with about a dozen, a number weather forecasters are expanding with new terms ranging from “wintry mix” to “snow event.”

Bat Swarm

What exactly is a belfry, anyway? The original term refers to a medieval bell tower which must have been a popular perching place for bats. Although I’ve never had a belfry, this is the first winter I recall that my husband and I have not had a disgusting little visitor flying through the house.
